Peter Gaillard papers, 1811-1847.

Papers consist of account books, estate papers, a plantation book, and other items. Two account books (1826-1834) of Peter Gaillard contain accounts for the sale of cotton and for groceries, sundry items, and other household expenses. A plantation book (1825-1847) contains lists of slaves owned by several Gaillard family members, with registers of births, deaths, and marriages. In addition, the book contains tax returns (1831-1840) of the estate of S. Gaillard (possibly Samuel Gaillard, 1801-1830), and crop statements for cotton crops at the Rocks Plantation, listing the number of bales harvested and the time when sold, their weight, price, and the net proceeds. Estate papers (1842-1846) of Peter Gaillard are mostly receipts, but also include accounts and letters of administration. Other items include bills of sale for cotton, an overseer's agreement (1840), conveyances, title (1834) to land in St. Matthew's Parish (S.C.) purchased by Peter Gaillard from Samuel T. Gourdin, and a letter (25 March 1839) to Gaillard from Samuel T. Gourdin regarding a title dispute. Papers include the estate papers (1833-1834), mostly receipts and accounts, of Francis Dwight Marion (1777-1833), a plantation owner of St. John's Berkeley Parish, and Joseph Couturier (b. 1778); executor was Peter Gaillard, Jr. (1783-1843).
